Holiday Survival Guide for the Sober Curious

Because joy > hangovers

The holidays are sparkly and magical… but let’s be real, they can also be a lot. Between family gatherings, long to-do lists, and endless “just one drink, it’s the holidays!” pressure, this season can feel like the ultimate test if you’re sober curious or alcohol-free.

But here’s the truth: you don’t have to white-knuckle your way through or avoid the party altogether. You can actually enjoy the holidays without alcohol—and I’d argue they feel even more fun, more meaningful, and way more memorable when you show up fully present. (Here’s my sobriety story if you’re curious.)

Why “No Thanks” Matters

One of the trickiest parts of navigating a sober curious holiday season is the constant offers of alcohol. People love to top off glasses or ask why you’re “not drinking tonight.” Having a few confident responses in your back pocket makes all the difference.

It’s not about being defensive—it’s about being prepared. A simple “I’m good with this one, thanks” or “I don’t drink, but I’d love a sparkling water with lime” lets you stay in the moment without feeling cornered. Confidence is contagious, and the quicker you move on, the quicker everyone else does too.

The Glass in Your Hand

Here’s the thing: half the awkwardness of not drinking comes from standing empty-handed. There’s something comforting about holding a glass, whether it’s a cocktail or a cranberry spritzer. That’s where mocktails and non-alcoholic options come in.

They’re not just “replacements”—they’re upgrades. A festive mocktail feels special, makes you part of the celebration, and takes the focus off what’s in your glass so you can focus on who’s around you. And honestly? Most people want to try what you’re having anyway.

Redefining Fun

For a long time, I thought “fun” and alcohol were inseparable. Girls’ nights, concerts, weddings—it all felt incomplete without a drink. But here’s the truth: if you’re serious about getting sober (or even testing it out), you’ll need to create new patterns of fun.

Yes, it might feel a little awkward at first. That’s normal. But awkward is temporary. Pride and freedom last way longer. And once you start experimenting, you realize fun was never about the glass—it was about connection, laughter, and memories you actually remember.

Fun might look like karaoke in an ugly sweater, a holiday light tour with cocoa in hand, a cookie bake-off, or even board games that get rowdy without booze. When the focus shifts from drinking to doing, you discover a version of fun that’s richer and more real.

The Mindset + Energy Shift

Sobriety isn’t just about what’s in your glass—it’s about how you feel in the moment. A simple mindset shift can turn “I’m missing out” into “I’m gaining mornings I love.”

And when things feel sticky, an energy reset can change everything. Step outside for a breath of fresh air. Refill your glass with something bubbly. Find one person for a deeper conversation. Sneak away to the bathroom for a few minutes of breathing space. And yes—you’re allowed to leave when you’re ready. Permission granted.

The Bottom Line

The holidays aren’t about what’s in your glass—they’re about how you experience them. And nothing feels better than waking up without regrets, remembering the jokes, and having the energy to actually enjoy the season.

So this year, give yourself the gift of clarity, freedom, and joy that lasts longer than the party. Sobriety—or even just curiosity—might feel different at first, but different doesn’t mean worse. It means better mornings, real memories, and a season that finally feels like yours.

Travel and alcohol have been sold to us as a package deal—airport bars, poolside cocktails, wine in Paris. But here’s the truth: traveling sober isn’t just possible, it’s better.

We’re told to follow the blueprint—buy the course, follow the formula, stick to the script. But someone else’s system can’t build your business. The only blueprint worth following is the one you create yourself.
