Old Rule:
Keep it professional. Don’t get too personal. Don’t let them see the real you.
For years, I tried to wear the mask of “professionalism”. I thought success meant polished headshots, perfect scripts, and never letting a crack show. I hid my struggles—a drinking problem, motherhood, burnout, perfectionism—because I thought they made me look weak. I kept my quirks under wraps because I didn’t want anyone to think I wasn’t serious.
It was exhausting. And honestly? It was boring. For me and for everyone else.
How We Show Up Impersonal
We all know this mask. It shows up as:
- Holding back our humor or quirks because they might not seem “professional.”
- Writing stiff, corporate-sounding copy when our real voice is playful or warm.
- Brushing off questions instead of admitting we don’t know the answer.
- Pretending everything is fine, even when we’re falling apart.
- Believing vulnerability will ruin our credibility.
Why This Rule Doesn’t Work for Us
Keeping it impersonal creates distance. It makes us feel like we’re performing instead of connecting. And it robs us of one of the most powerful tools in business: relatability.
People don’t buy from robots—they buy from humans. They don’t want polished perfection—they want connection. When we strip ourselves down to only the “professional” pieces, we lose the chance to build loyalty, trust, and community.
I’ll never forget the first time I shared a piece of my real story—messy, imperfect, human. Instead of pulling away, people leaned in – hard. They trusted me more. They saw themselves in me. And that was the moment I realized: my humanity wasn’t holding me back. It was what set me apart.
The Rewritten Rule: Your Humanity Is Your Superpower
Authenticity is not a liability—it’s the reason people will choose you, trust you, and stay loyal to you. Your story makes you relatable. Your quirks make you memorable. Your struggles make you trustworthy. By letting people see who you really are, you open the door to deeper relationships and stronger results.
