Day 40: Your gut knows.

Body + Soul

202.2

I forced myself to rest today.

I have a habit of going full speed ahead until I burn out completely. Even though this is the longest I’ve stuck to any routine, I can feel myself becoming dependent on it.

And while yoga is probably one of the healthiest habits to have, I realize the danger of swapping one dependency for another. So today, I stayed in bed a little longer. I had time, energy, and motivation to go, but something about it felt more like a “need.” I paused, took a few deep breaths, reminded myself that I went to two classes yesterday, and gave myself permission to rest.

I’m definitely looking forward to the warm studio tomorrow, but I’m proud that I took a step back, examined my intentions, and made the right call.

Although… I did have ice cream for dinner, so it’s probably a good thing I’m planning to go tomorrow. Whoops.

House + Home

Since I stayed home, I had some extra time today to make breakfast (well, Dale made breakfast, but I ate it), do two loads of laundry, run the Roomba, do the dishes, and make some lists.

One of those lists included a reminder to get softener salt. Now, this might seem trivial, but this simple little product makes my life so much easier when we have it—and incredibly annoying when we don’t. The dishes don’t come out clean, shampoo doesn’t lather, and my hair always feels like it still has build-up. My husband, who’s in charge of this task, doesn’t believe it makes that much of a difference. Until today.

As he was helping me with the dishes, I realized I left the Dawn dish soap in my shower. I called Miles to grab it for me (kids = personal errand runners). Dale looked at me and asked, “Why the hell is the dish soap in the shower?” I explained that I needed to rinse the build-up from my hair because, well, no softener salt.

He thought I was crazy. But later, he mentioned he felt like he had build-up in his armpit hair. LOL

So, we got softener salt today. Yay for small wins.

Fortune + Abundance

Given that we look forward to this day every year, it’s a small miracle we saved money today. It helped that I forgot my wallet.

We went to the Garden Expo at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison. We dragged our less-than-thrilled kids through over 200 vendor booths filled with seeds, plants, lawn ornaments, garden tools, and, of course, dehydrated dip samples (just mix with cream cheese, and voila).

But this year, we managed to buy only a few dahlia bulbs and some dirt. The perks of owning a flower farm—flowers are both a necessity and a tax write-off.

We even resisted the dip.

Nature + Nurture

Speaking of less-than-thrilled children, I think we’ve just been stuck inside for too long this winter. Winter break felt endless, and we’ve been out of school more than we’ve been in since New Year’s. My social calendar has been far from packed, so we’ve spent lots of evenings and weekends together as a family.

If I have to listen to one more episode of that kid playing Minecraft on YouTube while my own kid plays Minecraft on his tablet, I might lose my mind.

Tell me I’m not the only one reconsidering taking my kids on family vacation?
