My anxiety was not totally unfounded. It’s a big deal “coming out” to a world of drinkers; especially since for so long (so long) drinking has just been part of my identity. And, shall we recognize the elephant here? We do own a wine bar, which ironically was dreamed up and put in to motion during my first 90 days of sobriety a few years ago.

Money is weird. It doesn’t seem like it should be. At its simplest form, money is a tool of exchange used to facilitate transactions. It represents value and allows us to trade goods and services without the need for direct bartering.

Ever since I could make money, I spent beyond my means. I’ve always worked really hard so I could never really understand why I was constantly behind on bills; I should have been rolling in it. And over the years I have made sure that was the perception, within reason of course. I’m nothing if not Midwest Nice and would never want anyone to feel ‘less than’ around me.

For three full days I struggled with listening to and caring for myself versus disappointing someone else. I’ll be honest here, and this is embarrassing, I thought of many lies I could have told her that would have ‘forgiven’ me; illness that would have let me off the hook. But what kind of self-care coach would I be if I did that?

“Make sure you didn’t just buy yourself a job.”This piece of advice hit hard. One day, after a couple of years in, I was bartending at our wine bar and I was like, “oh fuck, I just bought myself a bartending job.” I swore I hung up my last bar rag in my late twenties. Very soon after that, I changed my perspective on hiring staff, rearranged the budget and started delegating tasks that I either didn’t like to do or just was plain not good at.

As we navigate through the various stages of life, we often encounter moments of introspection and self-reflection. One common phenomenon that we experience is often referred to as a “midlife crisis.” This is not uncommon after the death of someone as close as a parent but there are many other situations that have us questioning our purpose here; empty nests, career and work changes, relationship shifts, infidelity, traumatic accidents or revelations, etc. But it also doesn’t have to be anything dramatic. Age can simply be the reason we start questioning our existence. It’s essential to delve deeper into this concept to understand whether it’s genuinely a crisis or simply a natural part of the human journey.

I’ve drank pretty much concurrently, with the exception of pregnancies and the bouts of sobriety you’ll read on here, since I was 13. It was fun, then it was O.K. then it was just plain destructive. I had a physical health scare, on top of the decades of mental health scares, in late August and I decided enough was enough.

I always thought perfectionism was actually being perfect at something so when she asked my point-blank if I identified as a perfectionist my immediate answer was a “Fuck No” through a throaty laugh. I’m not perfect at anything, I told her.

“Hello?” “Is this Katy Ripp? Yes, hello. This is your wake up call.” This is the call where we tell you that you cannot continue this way or you will die. Maybe not today, or tomorrow, but slowly and painfully, you will die…without ever actually living. You’ll continue down this path, which inevitably leads to […]

I’m finding myself in these crazy rabbit holes on social media: celebrity break up progressions (I didn’t even know Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds were married before today), before and after pictures of someone I really don’t care about (Jonah Hill…I seriously clicked though like 35 pictures of him before I was like, what the […]

thought I was too tired, too exhausted, too overwhelmed to write tonight. I was scared I didn’t have the right thing to say and that a post like this would just add to the to-do, to-read, to-be list of someone that was equally, or exponentially, overwhelmed.

If you’ve known me for any length of time, or even not very long, you’ve probably figured out that I have, ahem, “dabbled” in a few different passion projects over the years.

People feel liberated to share their actual feelings when there isn’t a grimmace, an eye roll (I am the queen of eyerolling by the way) or snicker in their face. Emojis aren’t quite as involuntary as our body language.

How appropriate those two words are this week. This week was a struggle for most of my community. I use the term“community” because it’s the only way I know how to encompass it, even though I don’t love the word. I happen to own a couple of businesses in a small community; one brick and […]

Instead, we had some nervous kids and a real uncomfortable mom in our house this morning. A husband that went off to work yelling “good luck” from the front door…and then promptly returning and yelling up the stairs, “KATY, WHY ARE THE BUSSES RUNNING?” He didn’t say it, but I’m pretty sure he thought I got something wrong and they were actually supposed to be going to school.

You’ll find me to be a vibrant and unapologetic woman who wholeheartedly embraces the Law of Attraction, isn’t afraid to drop the f-bomb when needed, and loves with everything I’ve got. I’m all about proving that the impossible is possible, especially when others say it can’t be done. My passion is empowering women in midlife to live authentically, boldly, and without apology. If you’re ready to break free from societal expectations and pursue your ambitions with confidence, you’re in the right place.
