Transformation
A few years ago, my incredibly talented husband finally gave in to my relentless pleas and transformed our attic into a dreamy seed-starting space. Every winter, I started around 10,000 seeds for our cut flower farm, and let’s be honest—I’m too lazy to trek down to the shed. So, this cozy nook off our master bathroom, right above the garage, became my little seed-starting sanctuary.
When seed-starting season is over and the space becomes a mess of soil and trays, my true scanner nature kicks in. Instead of just cleaning it up, I thought: Why not transform it into something else I love? That’s when it became my yoga and meditation retreat. With a little elbow grease, a ten-minute timer, some yoga essentials, and a unicorn kid’s yoga mat (thanks to my tiny helper), I made it my sanctuary.
Find a Space
Now, I know not everyone has a dedicated space like this. But remember, it’s still just an attic above a garage, right next to a master bathroom that could use an upgrade. The point is, it doesn’t take much to create a space that feels inviting, even if it’s a corner of your home.
How to Create Your Own Yoga and Meditation Space
Whether you’re a multipassionate like me, always jumping from one project to the next, or simply looking for a quiet spot to unwind, here’s what you need to start your own practice:
1. Space
It doesn’t need to be fancy. A spot the size of a yoga mat will do. Whether it’s at the end of your bed, a hallway, or even a balcony, pick a spot and make it a ritual to practice there. Finding the right space might take some trial and error, so be patient.
2. Yoga Mat
Your mat is your sacred space, and all you truly need to start an at-home practice. The four corners of your mat can become a place of transformation. Below, I’ve linked some of my favorites if you need suggestions.
3. Speaker or Device
Music can set the mood for your practice. Use whatever you have—a record player, an old phone, or your current device—but if it’s your work phone, promise me you’ll switch it to Do Not Disturb. We already have enough distractions in our heads.
4. Music, Podcasts, or Yoga Recordings
If you’re doing yoga, find a class or recording you love. The pandemic left us with an abundance of virtual options, so keep experimenting until you find one that fits. Again, I’ve listed some of my favorites below.
5. Props
Depending on your practice, accessories like straps, blocks, or bolsters can make a huge difference. A strap and block can help deepen stretches and improve alignment, while bolsters are perfect for meditation or restorative poses.
6. Water Bottle
I’m a sucker for cute water bottles (seriously, it’s a problem). If a pretty bottle makes you drink more water, go for it. Hydration is key, so find whatever works for you.
7. Plants
I’m a flower farmer, so naturally, I had to bring plants into my space. Houseplants can thrive even in low-light conditions, and studies show they reduce stress and boost mood. Save a little water from your cute bottle to give them a drink after each session.
8. Lighting
Lighting sets the tone. Sometimes all you need is a candle in a dark room, while other times, natural sunlight is best. If possible, place your space near a south-facing window or even outdoors when the weather is nice.
9. Aromatherapy
Scents can impact your mood. Use them to your advantage: lavender for relaxation or citrus for energy. Essential oil diffusers work great, but a simple candle or fresh lemon slices can be just as effective.
10. Mists
End your session with a refreshing body mist. Fill a spray bottle with water and a few drops of essential oil or lemon juice. It’s a small luxury that feels amazing.
The Joy of Creating Your Own Sanctuary
You don’t need all the cute things to start. All you truly need is your body, your breath, and a willingness to move. But if cute things make you smile, go for it. After years of starting seeds and then abandoning the space in summer, I finally transformed it into a year-round haven for my well-being. It’s a perfect reminder that we can adapt and create what we need, one season at a time.
So, if you’ve been thinking about starting your own practice space, this is your sign. Pick a passion, dive in, and create a sanctuary that brings you joy. You won’t regret it.
